Top 10 * Restaurants in Caraíva

Another year of Caraíva in my life! Another January of wandering around this place… Lucky me! It makes me so happy… And I always have a hard time leaving!

This time though I kept my promise! Better late than never…

Last year I wrote the Top 10 Things to do but the restaurants were missing. Remember that?

I promised I’d list them but didn’t keep the promise. I even thought I’d done that. But I looked it up here and realized I hadn’t. The promise was all I had… You asked, I said I would do it and that was it. Time went by and I completely forgot about it.

But now it’s time! Here it is!

Are you ready? Let’s go on a tour through the best restaurants in Caraíva! Shall we?

I love Cachaçaria for dinner. There’s always some good music on (Caetano, Cartola…), people around (inside and outside the restaurant) and it’s delicious. They have some amazing fresh salads, a bunch of craft cachaça (typical spirit drink) – though I always go for Netuno! Don’t know what Netuno is?) and it’s kind of on the way for everyone who’s going out. Everyone passes by it. So good!

It’s less pricey and has some amazing home-cooked meals! For those who are craving some true Brazilian food, like rice, beans, steak (they also have chicken and fish) and fries, it’s perfect! It’s also very conveniently located, on the main street (everything is kind of around there) and I prefer it for lunch! Even though it’s packed the whole day.

I have to say I’ve never eaten at Principado. Not this time, nor last year. But I passed by almost every night. I have two friends who love this place (especially for their sushi) and had a reserved seat every night.

Since it’s on the way to the forró, I always stopped for a Netuno with them. It’s very, very charming! And the tables outside are perfect to do some Caraíva people watching!

Here I went for a meal several times! It’s by the beach, on the sand, on the other side of the main street I talked about, which is by the river. The sea is on the other side. Pretty close to my b&b. So it was the go-to for a late lunch before shower.

They have a cachaça frozen cocktail that’s so delicious! I always went for the amazing moqueca, rice and farofa overlooking the sea. Pretty lively. A must-go!

In fact, for those who enjoy jam-packed beaches, with music and all, that’s the place! There are some beach mats and futons, and it’s always crowded.

Picture the best arabic arabic pastry ever! Gosh! Best arabic bulgur wheat meatballs. Best chicken drumsticks. I don’t know if it’s the magic of this village, but it’s not just me who thinks that. It’s unanimous! R$ 5 each. Open 24 hours. Before the forró. After the forró. It’s miraculous when everything else is closed.

It’s right next to Forró do Pelé. Here’s how it works: you’ll go for the first time when you’re starving and there are no other options left. So you’ll try the pastry. From that moment on, you’ll feel like going there every single day, sometimes more than once a day!

I became a regular!

One of my favorite spots in the village. Bar do Porto. It overlooks the river. River sight and candle lights. The owner is a very nice French guy who kind of launched Caraivana, a samba/chorinho/forró band that plays there almost every night.

It’s hard to get in, they don’t make reservations, so you have to get there early. When it’ full, they’ll close the doors. And those who got in can enjoy some pizza and listen to the boys play. Magical. Beautiful. Special. A must-go!

Amazing restaurant! Unlike last year, this year they held some concerts and parties there. Delicious food. They have a pretty well-known lasagna. It’s always packed, with regular clients. Two groups of friends of mine used to eat there every night. Another forró warm-up spot. Perfect for a late lunch, when the sun is already down!

The best ray-stuffed fried pastry I’ve ever had! Pará is well-known for their fried pastries. Impossible not to try one of them! They’re delicious. Tables by the river. They also have a famous fish wrapped in a banana tree leaf, which I’ve never tried though. I always go for their amazing moqueca, which never let me down!

Oh, and they have the most amazing sunset view in Caraiva! So go eat a pastry and watch the sun go down behind the river. Mandatory!

What a delicious food they have in Mangaba! The sun dried meat typical meal is exquisite! Same for the Asian noodles. All very, very good. Now the mandatory order is the coconut caramel with brigadeiro for dessert. It’s MANDATORY!

Go for lunch! Save the most lively ones for dinner. This place is for a good meal and that’s it. Always packed, though.

Special! More sophisticated food, you know? Like plantain ravioli with a curry shrimp sauce! Gosh! My mouth waters just by thinking of it! The menu is full of this kind of unusual and amazing mixes. It’s a bit more distant than the rest, and it’s tinier. More silent. Perfect for a date. Want some time off the party radar while having a nice meal? That’s the place!

There you go! My top 10!

Oh my God, I miss this place so much… Left my heart there! Couldn’t help it…

Counting the days ‘til I’m back!

Soon, I hope!

#countdown #missingit

Top 10 * Restaurants in Trancoso

No matter where I go, I’ll bring us a top 10 restaurants. Every time. So before I go, I do my homework and prepare my list of the best places with the best food so I can try them all. Well, you know that, right? I’ve started other top 10 posts with that introduction.

So in Trancoso it couldn’t be different. I asked for recommendations, wrote them all down and off I went. I only had eight days to go, so I needed to make the most of them! Too little time to get to my ten favorites. I’d have to go out to eat everyday and more than once a day!

How did it go? Not well! I barely ate out. Blame it on the amazing Bahian cooks from the house where I stayed. There were neverending feasts at lunch and dinner, which brought close to zero my will to go out to eat and wait in the line at a packed restaurant.

So that was it, we REALLY almost didn’t eat out.

The result? All those places left unseen. An entire list to check!

But since many of you wrote me asking for the top 10, I thought I could share with you the few places I tried, as well as the ones I didn’t, but wish I did.

So who’s been there before is more than welcome to share their tips and, for the next time, I’ll use this top 10 as a guide as well. How about that?

Shall we?

Best pizza in Trancoso! That’s what people say!

Pretty good sandwiches and a must-try caipirinha! On my list!

EVERYONE I asked for tips told me about this restaurant.

So did friends who stayed at the same house where I was and who always spend new year’s in Trancoso. It’s an all-time favorite. And I was dying to try it.

It appears to be better for lunch, since it has an amazing view and a great pool. Perfect for some wine by sunset!

That one I tried! One time for dinner and another two for drinks. If you enjoy some cachaça, that’s the place! They have many different flavors of homemade cachaça – my favorite was the honey ginger one!

The food wasn’t all that. I loved the crab cake. And that’s it. The rest was pretty ordinary.

Great atmosphere (people say Elba Ramalho is always around singing a bit, but unfortunately I didn’t get to see her) and it’s pretty hyped up. It’s where the warm ups take place.

Good place to see and be seen, not easy to be seated though. Always crowded!

Also at the quadrado (almost everything is at the quadrado!), and you can sit under an almond tree.

Homemade food served by Silvana herself. The moqueca is the most popular dish on the menu!

Perfect place for meat, that’s their specialty!

Pretty fancy, even better for dinner than lunch.

And a friend of mine swore I’d have the best dulce de leche pancakes ever! But I missed it…

Self service restaurant in the middle of quadrado!

Homemade food, people say it’s very very good, at a fair price.

Great option for those days when everything’s packed, since it’s easier to get a table there and you’ll always bump into someone you know!

It’s a lunch staple!

Another one I got to go! Right next to Cantinho Doce. I went there but didn’t eat. Had eaten already and went just to meet some friends.

The atmosphere is great and my friends were pretty happy about the food.

It’s the same Capim Santo there’s in São Paulo! Those same natural vibes.

Healthy vibes, but still sophisticated!

Overlooking the beach, inside Estrela d’Água b&b. I heard it’s great to spend an entire day there. Enjoy the pool, restaurant and bar (which has amazing cocktails!)

They have a pretty famous dish, which I’ll definitely try as soon as I’m back there: coquinho! The food is served inside a coconut. Rice, beans, cassava flour, and you can choose between fish or jerk beef. People say it’s fantastic!

They also say they have the best crab cake in Trancoso.

That’s where I ate the most when I wasn’t at home! God! I had so much of that tapioca! With all kinds of stuff!

Think of a flavor? Make up a flavor? Anything! Just pick one…

They’ll have it!

The tent is called Delicias de Trancoso and is right next to the acarajé tent, by the entrance at the quadrado. And I swear, try as many flavors as you can! It’s just unbelievably good!

I miss it so much…

I went to Cacau twice, but also for drinks only. Super delightful place. And yesterday, over dinner at Cantinho Doce I heard three girls saying it was their favorite spot to eat in Trancoso. Best food.

I think their specialty is Bahian food – I was told the shrimp stroganoff is mandatory!

Phew!

That’s it!

What I experienced throughout this week there:

  1. All places packed. SUPER slow service. So I recommend you don’t get to the places starving (hangry, anyone?). Take your time, no rush, otherwise you’ll just stress out.
  2. It’s all pretty pricey, in general. Trancoso, new year’s. It’s all overpriced and that’s life. Get over it.
  3. Everything happens at the quadrado. Sorry if I sound redundant – in fact, if you’ve been there please share your impressions of these restaurants on the comments! But for those who never been there, it’s a good heads up: left the beach, took a shower, and got ready? Straight to quadrado!

It’s basically the city center, where there’s a church, a gigantic lawn bordered by four streets, an actual square (quadrado), with all the restaurants and shops next to one another. So you can pic where to sit – according to the music, to the audience, to how many people are in line – and enjoy!

I’m counting the days to go back and try all the great stuff on my list!

So good to eat in Bahia!

Hope to be back soon!

Wild Tales

When I got home saying that Boyhood was the best film I saw this year, my brother told me to watch Wild Tales so we could discuss it afterwards. So I rushed to see it.

There are six beginning, middle, end stories. They are not related, even though they have a lot in common. They picture ordinary, daily situations, and in each of them, someone loses it in a very particular fashion at some point.

I thought this was the point, about us being always attentive since even when everything seems to go well, it can all turn around in the blink of an eye. You can have your car towed, catch your husband cheating on you, have an accident… All-or-nothing situations. It’s all about the characters’ actions and reactions to the tricks life plays on us.

That moment when we lose control and explode, you know? That second when we turn the key and we’re out of our mind? So, that’s what it’s all about! Human behavior. Raw human beings. No frills. The best and the worst we can be.

All episodes are great. Some are outstanding. Others are good. But none of them is just o.k. They’re all unpredictable. Enticing. Fun! Yes, because that’s all told with tons of humor.

The screenplay is flawless. When it’s over, we want some more! Another six stories, please! Along with the Almodóvar brothers as the producers, the cast is also exquisite!

I loved this film! Really! Very, very much.

Boyhood is still my favorite this year. I was completely caught up in the movie’s beauty and subtleness. But Wild Tales is also a must-see. More fun, quick, straightforward. Less “moments for contemplation”, you know?

It’s just a matter of taste, really…

So bring your family together and go watch it this weekend because it’s a great film!

Healthy in São Paulo: Le Manjue

Those who follow me on instagram could see I’ve just started a detox. I gained a few pounds in New York – which was totally fine! It’s fine because it’s part of the experience. I ate everything I felt like. I almost didn’t exercise, even though we walked a lot. And, well, we’re not getting any younger, right? #tough

You’re always asking how come I’m thin while I eat everything I post here. Well… Genetic helps. Definitely. But there’s also the fact that I’m tall. So when I gain a few pounds it’s not that easy to see. It’s better distributed.

Anyway… I’ll talk about pounds and numbers when I talk about the detox (it’s more of a diet than a detox!) I’m going through this week. I only got to the subject to say that it was during one of my whining moments about the extra nyc pounds that a friend of mine recommended Le Manjue.

I’d asked, for the love of God, for a recommendation of a new and healthy (where I didn’t have any fattening staples on the menu!) and we went there. Delightful place at Vila Nova Conceição, in São Paulo.

They replaced “bistro” for “organique” in their name. So you can have an idea about their vibe. Organic, healthy, gluten and dairy free… Not radical, though. I was able to order some soda and get it no problem. And there are other amazing treats you’ll spot as soon as you open the menu.

I went the first time for lunch last week. And I went back two days later for another try. You get it, I loved it!

On the first time, I bravely ate gluten and dairy free. As for the second…

I was there with another friend who’s a regular and she suggested we had the rice balls. How on earth can I say no to rice balls?

Not happening. I’m not that mature! So, yeah, I tried it. “Of course, girl, go for it!

I DEVOURED it! And we asked for another round! That’s how amazing it is! You feel less guilty since they’re whole grain and all… But still… I’m pretty sure it would be a red flag for the green juice crowd.

It’s all detailed on the menu: vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free… For all kinds of taste and restrictions. And that’s what makes it so special!

Me and my friend Gabi Pugliesi are now able to have lunch at the same place and be both satisfied! It had never happened until this day. When we went for lunch or dinner together in New York it was always like that: only one of us was able leave the place satisfied. So hard to please both of us.

Not at Le Manjue though… You can take your monster carb-lover boyfriend and he’ll find a bunch of delicious options on the menu, for those who are not dieting or has no restrictions.

They have an amazing salad bar, which you can enjoy along with an option of protein, pasta or risotto, as well as a la carte options. I always go for the menu so I recommend the chicken crêpe and the pasta with mozzarella and fresh tomatoes. So good!

Not to mention the rice balls! Mandatory!

Magic In The Moonlight

Another one for my Woody Allen list. And this time, with the incredible Colin Firth. This guy is an acting genius. Gosh! Genius.

It’s the story of a girl who calls herself a medium and a magician who’s hired to debunk the alleged quack.

He’s completely skeptical. Cold. Only believes in what he can see. She is all intuition. Sweet.

He’s aggressive the whole time. She doesn’t let any of that affect her.

He fools other people for a living. She only speaks the truth.

She’s Emma Stone. Beautiful, as always. With those enormous eyes. Real charming. And Firth… Well, Firth is Firth. I’m a HUGE fan.

I really enjoyed the encounter of both actors. Their exchanges. Their game.

They balance each other the whole time. Some delicacy here, some boldness over there. Belief here, disbelief there. Truth here, scams there.

Pleasant to watch. But didn’t LOVE it though…

Nevertheless, I agree with those who say that a not-so-incredible Woody Allen movie is better than the average movie by most filmmakers.

So it’s a must-see!

E ela me indicou o Juliette!

Novo porque nunca fui. O restaurante em si é bem antiguinho e bombado. E eu adorei a indicação!

Comida bem gostosa. Ambiente mara. Vale super a visita!

Mas o Buvette me ganhou! Me convenceu do brunch.

A comida é maravilhosa!

A gente pediu mil coisinhas (umas croquetas maravilhosas!) e dividiu.

Quentinho. Crocantinho. Bom demais!

Sou viciada. Vou (ia, Julia! Ia!) tipo uma vez por semana. Mas o momento é do Morandi então vamos focar nele! 😉

Burrata mara. Prosciutto mara. Mesinhas na calçada e frequência também maras. E ganha do Pitti no atendimento que lá é impecável. Enquanto no Pitti, o povo é meio bruto.

E me deliciei.

Bem bem bem cool!
Meu happy hour preferido!

Só gente jovem, descolada, preço ótimo. Mais simples, sabe? Mais hipster, vai. Vamos falar assim!

Uma kombi no meio do restaurante. Tacos mil.

Simplinho!
O Red Rooster não é um restaurante. É uma experiência.

Fiz minha despedida lá. Fui nessa semana então tá tudo fresquinho na cabeça!

Fica longe, no Harlem.

Depois vocês me contam!

Ufa…..

Enfim…

Tomara que gostem das dicas! E quero notícias de quem experimentar alguma delas! Se valeu, se não… Se o lugar continua mara, se caiu…

Me mantenham informada, ok?!

Mais 10 para nossa lista que tava em 25. Temos agora 35 restaurantes em NY de sugestão.

Nada mal…

Que venham mais 10… E mais 10… E mais…

TAME IMPALA

You’re all very aware that I’m a pretty curious person, right? Very, very curious. I love to listen to new stories. Go to exhibitions of artists I’d never heard of. New cities. Try new foods. And so on…

I’m completely open to the new. Information and knowledge are never too much, so if there’s something I don’t know and you can introduce to me, you got me! And so (I’ve also said that before) I have a bunch of friends who always share their finds with me… That’s how I ended up at the Tame Impala concert in New York.

I’d seen they were about to play here and Lucio (my musical know-it-all friend) said I couldn’t miss it. I had bought tickets to their concert in São Paulo, at the Popload Festival, by the end of November, but according to him in nyc the vibe would probably be very different. So I should definitely go! It would be a life experience, as he usually says. And that’s my mindset. That’s what wins me over. Who’s to deny some life experience? Not me! Never!

Off I went… To the Beacon Theatre knowing absolutely nothing about those guys.

I mean… I knew they were Australian. Played a sort of psychedelic sound. And that’s it. I listened to a bit of their songs on the internet before buying the tickets. That’s all. I trusted said life experience and so I went!

I might even say it was the best concert I watched while I was away… (Bey and Jay Z don’t count, ok?) And I saw a lot of them! Really! And this time I was mesmerized from beginning to end.

All that without knowing how to sing a single song… Which is pretty important to me. I’m the kind of person who loves to know the set list by heart. To really feel like a part of all that. To expect my favorite songs. And I guess in the end of the day not knowing any lyrics at all was a positive aspect, since it made me pay equal attention to all of them. Enjoy it all, every second of it.

I felt they’re kind of like the Beatles of our generation, you know what I mean? But that’s a total hypothesis, ok? No professional analysis. Hope no one will criticize me for such a comparison. It’s just that there were some songs that really brought me to a real Beatles-ish place, that kind of feeling. With more colors, effects, psychedelism, definitely. Just press play to this song (one of my favorites in the concert) and tell me if you agree:

Sorry about the quality! I made it with my phone…

Now you tell me: does it make sense or not (#goosebumps)? Do you agree with me?

Well… Regardless of that, I really really loved it!

So I recommend that all curious people out there (who don’t know it yet) download it!

They’re geniuses!

And maybe we’ll bump into each other on their São Paulo concert on the 28th?!

Gossip Girl

Feels so empty after the tenth (and last) episode of Gossip Girl’s sixth season. I’m so bummed out. Like, really.

I started to watch it about two months ago, when Gabi Pugliesi was still here and made me do it. She said that since I was living in nyc I should watch at least a bit, that they gave a lot of tips of restaurants and plays, so I should definitely watch it.

I said ok, I’d give it a shot and see what that all was about.

The result?

Two months, 60 days and 130 watched episodes.

An average of 2 episodes a day. I feel almost like one of them.

When I started watching it I found it pretty silly. Cute, but silly. I don’t love the costume design like everyone said I would (just the black tie stuff) and I didn’t go crazy about Serena. It was much more about Blair. The show got me with the Blair and Chuck, Chuck and Blair thing.

OH MY GOD! You told me so… Many of you warned me “get ready to fall for Chuck” and you were so right! Fate kept putting Nate on my way the whole time (I saw him twice on the subway), but as for Chuck (my true love)… Nothing 🙁

Shall we dedicate an entire paragraph to this man? Like, forget that he’s a character? I don’t even know the name of the actor who plays the role, so let’s talk about Chuck as a real person. Not a fictional character. I mean, what’s with that man?? Where can I buy some? That low, hoarse voice, that subtle glance… The guy has a great love and is focused on that. All he cares about is her, nobody else. Help! So you can have an idea, I’ve even dreamed about Chuck. That’s how intense our relationship has been throughout those two months (#justsaying)

Enough with my crush and back to the show now!

I guess the show hits its climax about halfway through the, between the third and fourth seasons. The end, when someone’s father comes back from the dead, Blair marries the prince then ends up with Lonely Boy (whaaat?? That was a huge mistake! So absurd!), Serena becomes GG… I guess stuff got a little out of hand there. The Mexican drama is pretty catchy though, even surprising at times. And there are loads of nyc tips indeed (I knew 90% of them already, but it’s pretty cool to see the places you’ve been). So yeah, watching it from here really makes more sense.

A delightful pastime! I went through the entire thing, from beginning to end. And when I started I never thought I’d finish it. I looked at the five 24-episode seasons and the 10-episode sixth season and sighed. 130 episodes? How could they possibly have enough plot for all that?

And so it went… And it kept going… I loved going to bed and having an episode to watch before falling asleep. That became a routine. And when I saw it was over.

Now I have this huge hole to fill. So bummed out. Broken hearted.

I just love some binge-watching. Especially with shows that are already over so I don’t have to wait for the next episode.

Now I just have to find the next one.  Breaking Bad was the first on my list. But I’ve been so into this girly thing that I’m reconsidering. Girls, maybe. I don’t know…

Let’s see!
