Yet another encounter between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. I said I was going to make up for the lost movie time, right? That’s what I’ve been doing!
So yesterday I decided to see what they had to show. And I was presented a pretty fun movie, with an outstanding cast, but nothing new from the pairwork between the actor and the director. I imagine how hard it is, even after such amazing films like Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Well…
I really enjoyed it though. Much better than their previous Alice 3D. It’s the story of Barnabas Collins (played by Johnny Depp, of course!) who sees everything fall apart when his maid falls in love with him and he doesn’t love her back, instead falling for another lady. He finds out the disillusioned girl is actually a witch, who turns him into a vampire and kills the woman he loved. All that before the film actually starts!
The witch is exquisitely played by Eva Green. My God, she’s incredible in this movie! I may even say she’s the biggest highlight! Anyway, she locks the guy in a coffin and buries it. Real “if-he-won’t-be-mine-he-won’t-be-anyone-else’s” vibes. Then he’s found, 200 years later, by workers excavating the area. That’s when the movie actually begins!
It begins with the shock the vampire goes through by seeing the same city 200 years later. Good scenes of him facing technology and gadgets. But nothing new about Johnny Depp’s performance either. It’s not breathtaking. But we can see how much fun he has with the character. It’s clear how much they enjoy working together.
Michelle Pfeiffer is also fantastic! So elegant as the Collins matriarch. I really enjoy the entire cast! No exceptions! So, yeah, I had fun! Just because there’s nothing new about it, it doesn’t mean it’s not worth the tickets, right?
